A plea deal involving Joseph “Jody” Ellis, former Illini football player, was not reached Monday at the Champaign County Courthouse. Ellis will reappear in court on July 6.

Ellis’ attorney Ed Piraino said no further action is expected to take place on this case until co-defendant Derrick McPhearson’s trial gets underway Aug. 20.

“Jody’s doing just fine,” Piraino said outside the courtroom. “He was a good kid that got in a bad situation.”

Ellis and McPhearson, another former Illini football player, were charged with two counts of theft under $300 and four counts of residential burglary on March 5. Police discovered wallets, laptops, cell phones and other electronics in a suspected stolen car driven by Ellis during a traffic stop on the night of March 2.
