76-year-old man dies in hit-and-run

At approximatley 8 a.m. Aug. 30, Champaign police officers were dispatched to the intersection of W. Eureka and State streets for a hit-and-run accident involving an injured person.

William “Bill” Higdon, 76 of the 200 block of West Eureka Street, Champaign, was hit when the driver of a burgundy van owned by a 20-year-old man.

Higdon was pronounced dead at 12:33 p.m. Thursday at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana due to traumatic head injuries.

Champaign Police Lt. Joe Gallo said a van believed to be involved in the hit-and-run accident was found Thursday afternoon at the Shadowwood Mobile Homes park in Champaign.

The police continue to look for the 20-year-old owner of the vehicle to inquire as to who was driving the van at the time of the accident.
