At least five engines responded to the scene as displaced residents

gathered around the area of First and Daniel streets.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, said Champaign Deputy Fire Chief Tim Wild. However, the damage was contained to the apartment.

Authorities were still attempting to find the occupants at the time of publication.

Residents were allowed back into the complex just before 6 p.m. as

authorities surveyed the damage.

After emerging from apartment 32, University Group employee Andrew

Smith characterized the damage as “severe.”

There were no injuries.
