Champaign police arrest shooting suspect

Champaign police arrested a man Monday night for allegedly shooting a 22-year-old female at the 100 block of South County Fair Drive.

Police responded to a call about the shooting at approximately 9:35 p.m. and arrived to find the wounded victim, according to a press release issued by the Champaign Police Department.

The press release identified Markele D. Powell, 23, as the alleged assailant. His last known address is listed as 1101 North Sixth Street.

Police were informed that the suspect had fled on foot and commenced a search. After one hour, Powell was arrested without incident at the 1400 block of West Beech Street in Urbana, according to the press release.

Powell is currently in custody after being arrested for aggravated battery and attempted first-degree murder.
