NIU set to resume finals schedule after security threat

By The Associated Press

DEKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University planned to reopen and resume its final exam schedule after campus police investigated threats scrawled on a bathroom wall and determined there was not an “imminent threat” on campus, officials said Monday.

“University police are satisfied that the anonymous message no longer represents an imminent threat to students, faculty or staff,” university spokesman Joe King said in an e-mail.

Administrators closed the DeKalb campus Monday because of the threat, which included racial slurs and references to shootings earlier this year at Virginia Tech, officials said. Icy conditions after a winter storm also contributed to administrators’ decision to close, officials said.

Police found the threats scrawled on a wall in a dormitory men’s room Saturday night. One said “things will change most hastily” in the final days of the semester.

No one was arrested.

“University, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies have identified several leads and remain hopeful about timely resolution of the case,” the school said on its Web site.

Students, faculty and others were notified by e-mail, phone and fliers posted around campus of the decision to close.

“Just because of everything at Virginia Tech, they’d be stupid if finals weren’t canceled,” student Jennifer Sturtevant, 18, told The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle.

NIU President John Peters met with campus leaders and discussed the university’s actions, the school said. The university also made counseling services available for students.

Finals should resume Tuesday, unless wintry weather forecast overnight forced another closure, King said. Exams that were scheduled Monday will be taken Dec. 14.
