The City of Mattoon said in a press release that they were “honored to be selected as the site for the FutureGen project” and that they find this latest announcement “very disappointing.”

Illinois Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-19) was present at the announcement from the DOE Secretary Samuel Bodman that funding and support will be pulled.

“Our greatest fears have been realized,” Shimkus said in a statement released by his press secretary. “Now we have to regroup and review all of our options as we move forward. I promise to do everything possible in support of FutureGen, Mattoon, and Illinois coal.”
