Mass was ended early and a full St. John’s Catholic Chapel was cleared Wednesday night after a fire alarm sounded in Newman Hall.

The Urbana Fire Department responded to a call at the Catholic residence hall at about 9:30 p.m. A firefighter on the scene indicated the call was a false alarm, and there were no apparent injuries.

The chapel was filled with church-goers attending Ash Wednesday mass, marking the beginning of the Christian season of Lent.

The congregation was alerted to the fire alarm shortly after receiving communion, and was asked by a minister to calmly evacuate the chapel just before the end of the mass.
