Illinois among states suing government over new smog rules

By The Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. – Connecticut’s attorney general says several states, including Illinois, are suing to overturn what they call weak federal ozone standards.

Richard Blumenthal announced the federal lawsuit Tuesday against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

It says the EPA’s new smog-control standards aren’t stringent enough to protect the elderly, children and people with respiratory problems.

The states’ lawsuit comes on the same day several health and environmental groups filed a parallel suit.

The other states in the lawsuit are: California, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. The District of Columbia, the city of New York and Pennsylvania’s department of environmental protection are also parties.
