Champaign firefighters extinguished a fire that originated in the kitchen of a home at 1313 Frederick St. on Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched to the single story wood-frame house at 3:54 and arrived at 3:59 p.m. to find heavy smoke showing from the eaves, according to a department press release.

An investigator determined the cause of the fire was food left unattended on the stove. Both parents were out of state at the time of the fire and the seven youth occupants were assisted by their grandfather and an aunt. All of the house’s occupants had evacuated when firefighters arrived.

Moderate fire, water and smoke damage to the home was reported.
