The Urbana City Council’s Committee of the Whole will once again revisit the issue of cell phone bans at a meeting tonight.

The committee will discuss a possible ordinance that would fine drivers $750 or more, depending on the situation, if they were using their cell phone during the time of an accident.

The ordinance does, however, include a clause that would make come city government workers exempt, saying “all law enforcement, fire rescue personnel, emergency vehicle operators, public works personnel, and other government personnel are exempt from this section if a mobile communications device is a piece of equipment necessary to the normal functions of their position, and the use of the device was during the normal course of conducting their job functions.”

Also required by the ordinance is a year-long study of how often cell phone usage plays a role in accidents by the Urbana Police Department.
