Urbana girl survives being shot in leg

By Kathleen Foody

A 7-year-old Urbana girl is expected to survive after her mother’s boyfriend allegedly shot her in the leg Friday evening outside her apartment at 1726 E. Colorado Ave.

Shaferual M. Hunt, 30, of Urbana was arrested on a preliminary charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The girl was standing outside with her mother at the time of the shooting, according to an Urbana Police news release. The girl’s mother did not have her apartment keys with her and was trying to force open a window so she could climb inside.

Hunt, who also lived in the apartment with the mother and her daughter, believed a stranger was trying to break into the unit. He fired a shot in the direction of the window and the bullet went through the exterior wall and into the girl’s leg.

The release indicated Hunt was cooperative with police and was transported to the Champaign County Jail. Police recovered the pistol used.
