A fire that broke out in a Champaign apartment has been determined to be arson.

According to a representative from the Champaign Fire Department, a call came into the department at 5:18 p.m. on Monday for a fire in a detached garage on the 2000 block of Cypress Drive. The department responded and the fire was contained. Damage was estimated at $43,000 and was determined to be arson the same day.

The representative said that when the fire department determines a fire was caused by arson, they then begin working with the police department, because it is then a criminal investigation.

The Champaign Police Department was not available for comment as of Wednesday morning.
