Downtown, campus bars renovate for school year

By Hannah Hess

The light breeze haunting Daniel Street may carry a new scent this fall.

Two campus bars, C.O. Daniel’s, 608 E. Daniel St., and Kams, 618 E. Daniel St., underwent major renovations this summer, inside and out.

Doormen will be checking the ID cards of freshmen in front of freshly painted exteriors. Inside, the walls have been repainted and redesigned.

“We hung up some new Illini photos and put in some murals,” said Kams owner Eric Meyer. The bar is lined by a brand new footrest and some booths have been replaced.

“We’ve added some new high-top seating that is more at bar level,” said Meyer, adding that further remodeling would take place in the near future.

C.O. Daniel’s has a treat for patrons attending the bar’s signature special night for “ice bombs” — new booths have been installed on both sides of the main room.

Scott Cochrane, who owns C.O. Daniel’s, also remolded another of his Campustown mainstays. The Clybourne will be back open for business at its 706 S. Sixth St. location, as will the rest of Cochrane’s enterprise.

Makeovers may be rejuvenating Champaign’s night life, but the Urbana scene has a brand new offering.

With a full menu restaurant and full drink bar, 88 Broadway, 138 Lincoln Sq., offers upscale entertainment for students 18 and older.

“It’s a great place to go for a date,” said 88 Broadway bartender Myles Young. He said the bar’s location inside Lincoln Square Mall guaranteed no line out the door and that “you won’t have to be shoulder to shoulder.”

The bar was not arranged to accommodate the bumping and grinding taking place on the new wood flooring installed at C.O. Daniel’s. Instead, 88 Broadway hires a pianist for dueling-piano shows. The sing-along performances begin at 9 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

For those returning to campus aged 21 and older, the changes to nightlife in downtown Champaign may be the most important.

Upscale offerings downtown include martini lounge Boltini at 211 N. Neil St., and the nightclub SOMA. Beer drinkers can also continue the great debate over who offers the best draft selection, The Blind Pig, 120 N. Walnut St., or Mike & Molly’s, 105 N. Market St.

One downtown bar, Guido’s, 2 E. Main St., spent the summer remodeling. The grill will be open until midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends.

Another Champaign favorite, Cowboy Monkey, 6 E. Taylor St., will be embracing a change in scenery Labor Day Weekend as the bar opens a Sunday evening street festival at 7:30 p.m. to guests of all ages. Patrons will not be charged cover on that night, but the location on the street is only temporary.

One well-known Champaign-Urbana bar will not reopen its doors as students return. The Office, formerly located at 214 W. Main St. in Urbana, has closed for good.
