Train derailment in Champaign blocks traffic
September 8, 2008
CHAMPAIGN – Officials say a train derailment in Champaign will continue to block traffic all day.
Seven cars came off the Canadian National Railway tracks on State Street Monday morning.
Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn says nobody was injured in the derailment, but workers continue to repair the tracks and remove cars. Traffic was being rerouted.
Dunn says the clean up could take until the Tuesday morning.
Canadian National spokesman Patrick Waldron says the train was hauling rock and plastics. He says there is no estimate yet on damage, and CN is investigating why the cars derailed.
