Motorists encouraged to stay off road due to flooding

The Champaign Police Department encouraged motorists, and the public in general, to use caution today due to flooding caused by the rainfall. The weather has caused significant flooding in several of the low lying areas within the City of Champaign, according to a press release.

If drivers approach a flooded street Champaign police advise using caution or avoiding the street altogether. If a person’s vehicle stalls in a flooded area they should remain with the vehicle and call 911. If, however, the vehicle begins taking on water, the person needs to find higher ground immediately, according to the press release.

Champaign police also warned drivers to anticipate that the viaducts will be flooded during the rainfall.
