Damage control continues after wet weekend

By Hannah Hess

City crews continued flood cleanup Tuesday, with help from sunny skies that finally appeared after a grey weekend.

“We’re still going through and cleaning lines that have been clogged,” said said Rich Coyne, Operations Supervisor for the City of Urbana. Coyne said city engineers were following up with residents that reported damage. The city received 22 calls Sunday from residents regarding flood damage. An additional five callers contacted city offices on Monday, Coyne said.

The Champaign-Urbana community was not the only area suffering soggy conditions this weekend.

According to a report by Jim Angel, state climatologist, the rain was the remnants of Hurricane Ike, which struck the Texas coastline last week. The report, available online at the Illinois State Climatologist Office Web site, confirmed that amounts of four to 10 inches of rain were common in the central and northern parts of the state.

After some inspection, Coyne said, “I wouldn’t say there has been major damage to the city from this storm.”
