SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Police are investigating the death of a female University of Illinois at Springfield student who was gunned down at a gas station less than two miles from campus.

Police Lieutenant Chris Mueller says the victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after police arrived at the scene early Sunday.

Springfield police were releasing few details of the shooting and would not give the victim’s name or age. Mueller says only that detectives are following several leads.

University police sent an e-mail shortly after the shooting to faculty and staff, advising that the campus housing office and counseling center provide assistance Sunday and Monday to those affected by the shooting.
