At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, the University is conducting an oil spill simulation exercise where oil flows into the Embarras River, which runs just south of campus in Champaign.

The exercise will simulate a 2000 gallon spill and will take place near the oil tanks just west of Assembly Hall, said Keith Erickson, of the University utility management group.

In addition to the University, both the Champaign and the Urbana fire departments are participating.

According to a press release, the Environmental Protection Agency requires local response exercises annually.
