U-C Senate discusses participation, Global Campus
December 9, 2008
A proposal for academic professionals to be allowed to participate in Urbana-Champaign Senate failed at Monday’s meeting.
The proposal failed 38-39, and opposition to this proposal was brought up by Peter Loeb, a professor of mathematics.
“It is only through this senate that our faculty has a voice,” said Loeb. “40 years ago we decided to share that voice with our students. We should not take that decision as an opportunity to dilute the voice of our faculty.”
George Friedman introduced the proposal and spoke in favor of approving it because it will allow academic professionals, such as adjunct professors, an opportunity to be represented.
“The other (senates on the other) two campuses have added representation of academic professionals, and their results have been very successful,” said Friedman.

The proposal would have taken 11 academic professionals out of 4,000 on campus.
Multiple senators spoke in favor of representation of academic professionals, but in a written vote, it still failed.
An item regarding Global Campus was deferred to the February senate meeting because of timeliness.
Senate executive chair Nick Burbules said Global Campus would be discussed further in the next meeting, and it would be advisable to hold the proposal until then.
The proposal was to make a distinction between University of Illinois degrees earned through Global Campus and on the Urbana campus.
“We have to say this is not a UIUC degree, and I don’t see any reason this would not be what the senate would say in February,” said Mark Roszkowski, a professor in Business. “We need to send a message, I don’t think we can ignore the fact Board of Trustees basically told us to drop dead.”
