Urbana is one of ten sites to be awarded federal grant funds in for historic preservation projects in Illinois communities. The Urbana Preservation Commission will receive over $4,256 to sponsor a workshop on rehabilitating historic buildings.

The funding is distributed through the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency on a matching basis with 70 percent paid for by federal funding and local funds making up the remainder.

Other Illinois communities receiving the funds include Chicago, which will update and print a “Chicago Landmarks Map” brochure, and Crystal Lake, which plans to reprint the “Historic Downtown Crystal Lake Self-Guided Walking Tour” brochure. The largest monetary grant, $21,000, went to Oak Park for the development of a comprehensive and strategic historic preservation plan.

Glen Ellyn, Joliet, Rockford, Rock Island and Will County were also awarded historic preservation funding.
