Members of the community and those reeling from the tragedy watched as fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers reminded the world of those lost last Feb. 14.

“I think it’s very meaningful that young people from other universities in Illinois came together here today, honored their lives and we are going to go forward, together, forward. That’s the motto,” said Governor Pat Quinn.

The wreath ceremony fit with the day’s theme continuing to move forward, while remembering those who were lost.

“People feel a sense of comfort just from this day, which is important,” said Nikki Ruffin, doctorate student.

The wreaths were hung on signs with the names of the students and the slogan “Forward, together, forward”.

“We are thankful for the power of healing,” said Eddie Williams, executive vice-president of Northern, in a speech this morning. “We ask for the continued healing. as we pursue our quest to make sure that darkness will never conquer our light.’

Cherilyn G. Murer, chair of the Northern board of trustees said, the community never doubted its ability to survive. She said that Northern has prevailed.

Northern graduate student Isra Baig said that people showed up today to continue to heal from the wounds violence left.

“It shows that our university is a very large community,” said Michelle Kerulis, Northern doctorate student.

The victims would want their peers, families and community members to move forward, Murer said.

“We honor them by fulfilling our dreams,” she added. “We move ahead because we believe that is what they want.”
