A walk around the Quad is normally a piece of cake, unless you were one of the several men that participated in “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” on Sunday afternoon.
The walk was in accordance with Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
“It was a walk to raise awareness of sexual violence, by having men walk in women’s heels,” said Jennifer Kudirka, vice president of the Panhellenic Council, which helped plan the event.
The men donned the high heel footwear and walked one lap around the Quad. They were then assisted by the women in the crowd for another half lap. The walk was followed by a short speech by Ross Wantland, coordinator of sexual assault education for the Women’s Resources Center.
“It was kind of a silly event, but it had a serious message to it. It was to get men’s involvement in this issue that both men and women need to be participative in,” Kudirka said.

Mike Pecoraro, sophomore in LAS, said the event was beneficial for him personally.
“I actually took something away from it,” he said. “It raised my awareness for rape and sexual violence.”
Kudirka said she was worried because there was poor attendance at the event last year.
“We were kind of hoping that men would show up, because last year I don’t think many men showed up when they did this,” Kudirka said. “There was a great turn out (this year) and I think that the guys really got the message and are going to be more apt in getting involved, even if it’s just in a small way.”
Wantland said the event was a small step towards raising awareness for sexual assault.
“I think it is a first step,” Wantland said. “I think that another thing that is really powerful for all these young men here is that this is probably the first time they have been in such a large group of men that said, ‘This isn’t okay. I am going to do something, I am going to take a public stance to show that I am not okay with sexual and domestic violence.”
