Recently, a spam email from a University account was sent to other students’ accounts.
The email addresses the receiver as a friend that is traveling abroad and was unfortunate enough to be mugged. The sender requires financial help and requests a reply to help ease his/her depression and confusion.
Emails such as this one have been spammed to University accounts before. According to a representative at the CITES Help Desk, spam emails must be forwarded to the Help Desk’s email ([email protected]) for them to be stopped.
This can be done by opening the email and then selecting “Open Original.” This provides the information to tell whether the student’s email is simply attached to the spam to seem that it is directed from them, or whether the University account has in fact been compromised.

By forwarding this information to the Help Desk, further spreading of the spam may be prevented.
To prevent compromised accounts, avoid saving passwords on computers. Should issues occur, the CITES Help Desk can be reached in various ways each day of the week.
