The 13th annual Webby Awards were announced Tuesday and film critic Roger Ebert was named person of the year.
Ebert was awarded for “raising the bar for online journalism,” according the the awards site. This was shown through his blog on the Chicago Sun-Times’ website.
“Ebert’s insights – be they in film, online media, journalism or life – and his unparalleled level of engagement with followers and fans – (have) made the Internet a more thoughtful, engaging and self-aware environment,” it said in the award.
The awards were chosen by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-member group of Web experts. This year’s winners will accept their awards June 14 in New York at a ceremony hosted by B.J. Novak of “The Office.”
The Webbys have long been famous for their short speeches, which are limited to five words. Ebert has already enlisted his Twitter followers to help him think of his speech, which he posted on his blog.
