SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. — A University of Illinois student was killed in a whitewater rafting accident on the Upper Gauley River on Sunday, officials said.
The woman fell out of the raft when it tipped shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday, said Len Hanger of Songer Whitewater. Hoy Murphy from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources said her identity would not be released until next of kin are notified.
Hanger said guides were unable to rescue the woman and her body was recovered at about 4:20 p.m.
“The girl was pinned in the rocks,” Hanger said. “That appears to be what happened.”
Hanger said he believed there were eight people aboard the raft and several others went into the water, but were unharmed.

Inclusive Illinois Day to commence Wednesday
The University will honor Inclusive Illinois Day this Wednesday. Inclusive Illinois Day, a part of iUnite, is a campus-wide celebration of the unique cultures and contributions of faculty, staff, alumni and students at the University, according to the press release.
There will be about three and a half dozen stations throughout campus promoting the day, said Monique Rivera, senior program coordinator for the department of equal opportunity and access.
“Inclusive Illinois, one campus, many voices, is the University’s commitment to cultivating a community at Illinois where everyone is welcomed, celebrated, and respected,” according to the website.
