A 21-year-old University student who was in critical condition after an accident late Friday night has passed away, according to a press release from the Champaign County Coroner’s office.

Brad Bunte, who was a junior in Media, died as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident Friday. He was pronounced dead at 11:25 a.m. Monday at the Carle Foundation Hospital.

An autopsy will not be performed, and further information is unavailable at this time.

Bunte was hit by two vehicles around 11 p.m. Friday while crossing University Avenue against traffic. A van clipped him and knocked him to the ground, and a second car then ran him over. Sgt. Andrew Charles of the Urbana Police Department said no tickets have been issued to the drivers of the vehicles, and the investigation is ongoing.

Bunte was on life support at Carle Foundation Hospital and was not expected to recover. His family does not attribute his accident to Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, which also occurred Friday.

Bunte had been a member of The Daily Illini staff as a sports reporter since Fall 2010.
