For a night that embraces mischievousness, Halloween crime levels were rather tame this year. On Monday, Urbana police responded to the fewest number of crimes on Oct. 31 than they had in the last six years. There were only eight crimes reported this year — down from 28 in 2010 — according to crime numbers compiled by Pat Moose, staff assistant for Urbana police.
Halloween has been over a weekend for the past three years, so those numbers are expected to be somewhat higher, said Lt. Tony Brown of the University Police. Two prior reported years fell on weekdays, though, and their crime rates were greater than 2011 numbers.
Brown compiled his department’s numbers for Oct. 31. They show a decline over the past four years, with 2011 having only a single crime reported.
He said University police do not usually take special measures for Halloween.
“I don’t believe there’s anything we necessarily do, unless there is a special threat,” Brown said.

He said the “shooting threat”:https://www.dailyillini.com/index.php/article/2008/10/note_threatens_halloween_shooting that was found on a note in the Undergraduate Library in 2008 is an example of when they would take extra precaution.
Champaign crime numbers were not ready at press time, but Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said this year appeared to be routine.
“We haven’t had anything that stands out,” she said.
She said that this is common for what occurs in Champaign on the holiday.
“We haven’t seen a correlation between Halloween and crime in Champaign,” Dunn said.
Brown noticed a similar lack of correlation.
“(Halloween) was not any different from any other day,” he said.
