An event sponsored by the Students for Justice in Palestine, or SJP, will feature conversation about issues concerning Palestine and its interaction with the United Nations.
Jeremiah Pickert, junior in LAS and treasurer of SJP, said bringing up this discussion is extremely important “to create a discourse on Palestine that does not tie it’s destiny to Israel’s anxiety,” and Palestine is not solely a security threat.
Pickert said the conversation is especially significant in light of the recent United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, vote to affirm Palestine as a member.
“We as Americans need to understand our obligation to be aware and responsible to the Palestinian people since the United States greatly contributes to the oppressive occupation they have to endure and the constant stalemated state solutions,” he said in an email.
Two University political science professors are participating in the panel, Paul Diehl and Kenneth Cuno. A professor from Illinois State University, Issam Nassar, will also participate.

“The event will be a panel – with 15 minute specialized presentations about specific topics that encompass the UN bid – from each of the three,” Pickert said.
A Q & A will follow the panel allowing students to ask questions about the situation.
Some of the topics that will be covered in the panel are the Palestinian desire for statehood, the path of the formal peace process between Arafat’s death and Abbas becoming president, and the UN legal process to become a member.
The event is set for Thursday, Nov. 3 in Gregory Hall room 223.
