The Native American House will be screening ‘Finding Dawn’, a movie about the experiences of Native American women in Canada, on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. The movie will be shown at the Native American House at 1206 West Nevada Street.
The documentary profiles three women, while focusing on the plight of the large number of Canadian Aboriginal women that have gone missing or been murdered in the last 30 years. The women have disappeared across Canada in places including Saskatoon, Vancouver and British Columbia.
The film was made by Christine Welsh, an associate professor at the University of Virginia, who has been making movies for over 30 years. Her other movies focus on topics related to Canadian Aboriginal women. ‘Finding Dawn’ won a Gold Audience Award at the Amnesty International Film Festival in 2006.
The movie is co-sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center, the department of American Indian Studies, department of Sociology, Amnesty International, National Organization for Women, the Channing Murray Foundation, University YMCA and the department of Gender & Women Studies.
