The City of Champaign will be hosting an open house on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Venue 51. The open house will have an overview presentation of the Green Street Steetscape Project.

Chris Sokolowski, Project Manager of the City of Champaign Department of Public Works stated that there will be a short presentation of what the project entails in addition to the overview.

“Basically, at this point, the preliminary design concepts of what amenities and what improvements have been made with the project,” he said. “There will be a question and answer period and the conceptual drawings showing the types of improvements that we’re looking at.”

Coordinators are seeking feedback at the meetings. The concepts of the project will be finalized in late February. They will be presented to the council in about a month, Sokolowski said.

The City is planning a reconstruction of Green Street from Fourth to Neil streets for 2016. Clark Dietz is leading the project, which features wider sidewalks, safer crosswalks and improved lighting and traffic design.

The meeting will lead to further development of plans and working on the specific details of the project. Sokolowski mentioned that there will be another meeting towards the end of the design phase. It will be an informational meeting where the public will learn the final details and reroutes during construction.

The reconstruction project is being funded by the City Food and Beverage funds and a federal TIGER grant. The project is expected to cost $8 million.
