In the Wednesday, April 15, 2015 issue of The Daily Illini, the story, “Biking statistics urge increased safety on campus,” was published under the supervision of our news department.
The story detailed how bicycling accidents are common on the campus, and how both bikers and pedestrians will benefit Master Plan: a $4 million project aimed to improve biking.
However, it came to the attention of the executive editors Thursday morning by a concerned reader that some sources and information in the article were plagiarized and inaccurate.
These egregious errors included information taken from an independent study and not properly attributed to Neutral Cycle. The data from the graphic map was also taken from the Neutral Cycle study and went attributed. Additionally, the piece referenced and attributed to a Matt Crosby of the University’s Police Department. Crosby is not an employee of UIPD and instead works at the Neutral Cycle shop.
