Senate Executive Committee selects name for new University college of medicine
June 16, 2015
The Senate Executive Committee met to discuss the official name for the University’s new college of medicine on Monday at 2 p.m. in the English Building.
After 40 minutes of discussion, the SEC decided to name the new college the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. The hospital donated $10 million to the college, and will be working with it alongside the University.
“We thought that Carle Illinois College of Medicine showed that it was an equal partnership,” Chancellor Phyllis Wise said. “And we put Carle first instead of Illinois first because they were the first to step up to contribute millions of dollars to the college.”
According to SEC Chair Rory Campbell, this was the first faculty-led SEC meeting where the naming of the college was discussed. Other community members also attended the meeting to listen to the arguments for and against the name.
The ending vote on the name came down to 6-2-1. Some SEC members had concerns with Carle being included in the name, stating that some individuals in the community have expressed grievances toward Carle.

Variations of the name were also proposed. Joyce Tolliver, SEC member and associate head of the department of Spanish and Portuguese, proposed the name Carle College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Robin Kaler, associate chancellor for public affairs, said Carle would be a temporary name for the college until a bigger donor asked for their name to be included in the new college of medicine’s title.
“Ideally, this would not be the permanent name,” Kaler said. “Ideally, there’ll be another name with a really generous donor. That would be wonderful.”
Wise hired Kaler to research possibilities for the name and to think of acronyms that could be created. Kaler was also tasked with considering how the name would impact the college.
Because the name is temporary, a majority of SEC members came to accept it. However, some wanted the University name to be more prominent. Wise said Illinois identified the University.
“We put Illinois on it because that is our name. We are no longer the University of Illinois,” Chancellor Wise said. “Illinois means us and we really want that to be that way, so we can use either Illinois or we can use the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.”
Wise said the new institution for medicine will be set up just like the preexisting colleges within the University. The new college of medicine will have an executive chair, department head, etc.
After the name was approved by the SEC members, the meeting was adjourned and President Timothy Killeen spoke. This was the first time Killeen attended an SEC meeting. He discussed how he plans to help the University.
“The state is in trouble,” Killeen said. “It is our responsibility to not just cut our budgets, but we need to optimize our budgets, and then perform on that basis. And that requires faculty imagination, faculty discourse, faculty-led analysis, collaboration and, I would say, not just on this campus, but across the University of Illinois.”
Editor’s note: A previous version of this article stated that Joyce Tolliver was vice chair for SEC, and quoted her saying people in the community have expressed their dislike for Carle. This was a quote from a different SEC member, and was inaccurately attributed to Tolliver. The Daily Illini regrets the error.
