Following an investigation by the Illinois State Police, Jerad B. Gale, a Champaign police officer, was arrested on charges of criminal sexual assault on Tuesday, June 23.

The 31-year-old was hired by the Champaign Police Department on August 27, 2012. There is currently no sign that any of the allegations took place while he was on-duty as a police officer, according to a press release from the Champaign Police Department.

The charges claim that Gale sexually assaulted two women, one in Champaign County on November 9, 2013, and the other in Piatt County between July 4 and July 28, 2012.

The two victims were in a long term relationship with Gale when the assaults occurred, according to the release.

Gale faces one count of criminal sexual assault in Piatt County. In Champaign County he faces one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated domestic battery. 

Criminal sexual assault is punishable by 5 to 15 years in prison, aggrevated criminal sexual assault is punishable by 6 to 30 years and aggravated domestic battery by 3 to 7 years, according to a press release from the Champaign County district attorney. 

Gale is on investigative leave from the department during the criminal investigation and an internal investigation, according to the release. 

After being arrested, police took Gale to the Piatt County Correctional Center and a formal arraignment is being scheduled in both counties.
