UIPD sees increase in bike thefts
October 18, 2015
The number is up from 2014 with a total of 61 bikes reported stolen. However, it is down from 2013, when 107 bikes were reported stolen.
On Thursday, the UIPD released video footage of a suspect removing bikes from racks outside of the Siebel Center, 201 N. Goodwin Avenue Oct. 8 around 4 p.m. The video identifies the suspect as a young, black male wearing a Chicago Bulls sweatshirt, faded jeans and gray Nike shoes.
Another video shows suspects manipulating bikes attached to racks outside of the Electrical and Computer Engineering building, 306 N. Wright Street, Oct. 12 around 11:30 a.m. The video shows three suspects — believed to be teenagers — toying with bikes.
The UIPD recommends using a U-Lock to discourage theft and attaching the bike frame and one tire to a bike rack. Additionally, bicyclists should attach their bikes to racks intended for bikes, as opposed to railings or other fixed objects.
