Sidewalk snow removal ordinance in effect

By Daily Illini Staff Report

The Champaign Public Works Director has declared the sidewalk snow and ice removal requirement for Downtown and Campustown areas to be in effect.

The ordinance went into effect at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20. According to the requirement, all sidewalks must be cleared within 48 hours after the declaration, or by 12:15 p.m. on Friday, January 22.

In compliance with the rule, a path must be made and maintained on sidewalks that is the width of the sidewalk or 48 inches, whichever is less. If a property is situated on a corner, the owner must also clear the ramps to maintain a path from block to block.

Any sidewalk that does not comply with the ordinance may be cleared by the City of Champaign at the owner’s expense.
