The Daily Illini’s finals survival guide
December 11, 2016
Finals can be a stressful time for students, but follow these study tips to help you power through exams and into winter break.
To have a productive study session:
-Know which environment would be most productive for studying for you. Whether it’s a coffee shop, one of the many campus libraries or a quiet study room, pick a place where you can truly focus.
-Work with a group or by yourself. Studying with friends sounds fun, but make sure you all go in with a mindset to study. Otherwise, stick to studying by yourself and really hone in on your notes to be more productive.
-Bring headphones or music to help drown out background noise.

-Bring healthy snacks and water. Studying will come easier if you properly fuel your body.
-Wear comfortable clothing that you can study in for a long period of time.
-If you need help finding a study group, the Tutoring Center can help you find one.
-Plan out what you’re going to study and when. It’s easier to stay on track if you have a schedule.
For health and wellness:
-Eat, don’t skip meals. Make healthy decisions, with a few treats here and there to keep yourself going.
-Remember to shower and practice good hygiene. Don’t stink up the library.
-Exercise for a much-needed break and stress relief.
-Sleep and take naps. Now is not the time to skimp on rest!
-If you’re feeling anxious or stressed, take the time to relax and calm down. Then regroup and get back to work.
-Take advantage of Free Yoga at Krannert Art Museum 12-1 p.m. every Tuesday.
General study tips:
-Don’t cram. Plan out what topics to study each night leading up to your exams.
-Study in smaller chunks, versus larger cram sessions.
-Organize your supplies and notes to make studying flow more easily.
-Ask for help. Email professors, TA’s or fellow peers. But don’t wait until the last minute to do so.
Habits to avoid:
-Try your best not to cram. You’ll just go into your finals stressed.
-Try to limit excessive caffeine intake or lots of fast/junk food.
-If you’re tired, sleep. You’re health and wellness come first.
-Take breaks, but don’t abuse them. Keep focused.
-And again, only study with friends if they will be equally as focused and not distracting.
