Last month, the non-profit corporation Three Spinners Inc. opened a community resource center at University YMCA as a part of the YMCA’s New American Welcome Center’s effort to build a more inclusive and welcoming community.

“It’s a central location where people can come and access the things that they need,” said Gloria Yen, the new American Program Coordinator for the YMCA. “The purpose is just to create a flourishing community.”

Refugees, immigrants and other community newcomers are welcome regardless of nationality, religion or legal status. The center provides many goods and resources to the newcomers, including free clothes, furniture, school supplies, language practice, resume building, job interview coaching and more.

“It operates as a free store,” Yen said.

The center is located on the lower level of the YMCA in room k4. It is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m on Mondays through Fridays or by appointment. Bike racks are available outside of the main entrance, and there are many bus lines that run nearby.

“[The center does] a lot of volunteer recruitment in the community,” Yen said. The center is currently seeking volunteers who are able to offer their special skills – whether that be sewing, language practice, etc. – to help the community. Volunteers are asked to put in at least one three-hour shift per week.

Appointments and volunteer information can be found on their website.
