Pavement repairs temporarily close street

Green Street is under construction around the corner of Second and Third streets.

If the weather is permitting, the portion of Goodwin Avenue between Illinois Street and Green Street will be closed from 7 a.m., March 17 to 5 p.m., March 26 for pavement repairs, according to the Urbana Public Works Department.

Craig Shonkwiler, assistant city engineer for Urbana, said these repairs are due to a broken water pipe that occurred in early winter. Now that the weather has warmed up, the construction workers are able to continue the repairs.

“The plan is to work on the pavement repairs at Goodwin to Lincoln Avenue over spring break through Monday determining on the concrete strength,” Shonkwiler said.

The construction is an extension of the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project, which is intended to improve access for all modes of transportation on the campus and provide direct connections to downtown Urbana and Champaign.

Access to properties south of Green Street on Goodwin Avenue will be available through Oregon Street. Additional construction and closures may occur near campus during spring break.

Shonkwiler said pedestrians and drivers can face potential dangers around construction sites.

“Anytime a pedestrian or driver enters a construction zone, he or she should watch out of equipment and trucks entering and exiting the site,” Shonkwiler said. “Those types of things can be dangerous especially for pedestrians, so look up and around.”
