Bioengineering professor Rashid Bashir has been named the next dean of the College of Engineering, the University announced Wednesday.

Bashir will succeed Andreas Cangellaris, who has been the Engineering dean since August 2013. Bashir will officially take over November 1, pending approval by the University Board of Trustees, according to a news release.

“I am deeply humbled and honored,” Bashir said in an email. “It’s a wonderful opportunity and a tremendous responsibility. The College of Engineering and its faculty, students, and staff are simply the best. I am so excited to work with them to raise the college to new heights.”

Bashir’s previous positions include director of the Micro and Nanotechnology Lab in the College of Engineering, as well as the department head of Bioengineering. Bashir is also a member of the founding team of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and was in charge of creating the Health Care Engineering Systems at Illinois.

“In these positions, I was able to work with many of the great faculty, students and staff in these departments,” he said. “These administrative and research leadership positions enabled me to be selected as the new dean of Engineering.”

Bashir said he will bring his experience in interdisciplinary research and leadership to work with the College of Engineering.

“I am very thankful for this great opportunity and look forward to an exciting time ahead,” he said.
