University library to display typewriters of former editor-in-chief Roger Ebert, Hugh Hefner
June 17, 2019
The typewriters of famed University alum — including movie critic Roger Ebert, Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner, writer Carl Sandburg and novelist James Jones — are on display at the Rare Book & Manuscript Library, located within the Main Library. The exhibit showcases the early works of the likes of these renowned celebrities.
As former editor-in-chief of The Daily Illini in 1963-1964 during his senior year, Ebert’s exhibit will include the issue containing his first byline as well as his first issue produced as editor-in-chief.
Hefner’s typewriter is a relic from his college days on which he typed both articles for the first issue of Playboy in addition to his first letter from the editor. It was sold at an auction in December 2018, on loan for the exhibit.
The exhibit will be on display until August 30.
