Champaign high school student brought loaded gun to school Tuesday

While a student was being escorted out of Centennial High School around noon Tuesday, a school resource officer found a loaded handgun and ammunition in the student’s backpack, according to a Champaign Police press release.

The 16-year-old student was identified by the resource officer as allegedly being involved in a separate theft investigation. As part of the arrest procedure, the student was escorted out of the school to a private location where the student was also searched and the gun was found.

The student was then taken to Champaign PD for further questioning and eventually taken to the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center, where future court proceedings will be set.

“Champaign Police have no additional information to suggest there is an immediate threat to our area schools,” the press release stated.
