Champaign County upgrades emergency sirens

By The Daily Illini Staff Report

The outdoor warning sirens in Champaign-Urbana, Savoy and the University are being upgraded and will be tested Monday to Jan. 31 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Within this circulation, 39 sirens will be impacted, and the Champaign County Emergency Management Agency advises people not to be alarmed if they hear a siren during calm weather.

The siren upgrade will include modernizing the system to digital communications rather than analog, according to a press release from the Champaign County Sheriff’s office. The sirens will also be upgraded for “automatic activation of the sirens in the tornado warning area issued by the National Weather service.”

Braniff Communications, the siren contractor, will evaluate the systems individually as they are activated.

CCEMA is reminding residents that outside of siren testing, when warning sirens are sounding to seek shelter immediately.
