Accident leaves one dead

Champaign Police responded to an accident at the intersection of Kirby Avenue and Park Haven Drive Friday night, where a pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene.

Around 10:59 p.m., police arrived to the scene, where they collected eye-witness statements and conducted a preliminary investigation. According to the reports, the pedestrian, a 36-year-old male, stumbled into the roadway, fell down and was later struck by an oncoming vehicle. Police provided immediate medical assistance upon arrival until paramedics arrived, but the victim succumbed to his injuries around 11:57 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the victim at first drove away from the scene but later arrived at the Champaign Police Department. The driver was cooperative with the investigation, according to a press release.

No arrests or citations have been issued at this time; however, the investigation is still ongoing.

A statement was released on Saturday morning from the Champaign County Corner naming the victim as 36-year-old Corney McClendon of Champaign. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
