A University student was assaulted early Sunday morning near the intersection of Fifth Street and Daniel Street.

The student was walking with a friend on the sidewalk at around 2:55 a.m. on Sunday when the pair was approached by a group of five individuals, one of whom punched the student in the face, according to a statement by the University Police Department.

Several people then kicked the student while he was on the ground, the statement said.

According to police chatter at the time, the five offenders fled north after the incident and were described as white males who were all wearing gray shirts.
