Man shot and killed in Champaign

A statement released from the City of Champaign announced Saturday morning that a man was shot at the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue Sunday night.

According to the statement, the victim, a 34 year old man from Champaign, was hit by gunfire after exiting his car in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

The suspect fired multiple shots at the man, who ran to a nearby apartment for cover after being hit. The suspect then fled the scene.

According to the news release, the victim was given medical aid on the scene for a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound. He was then transported to a local hospital by ambulance, where he was declared to be in critical condition and eventually died from his injuries.

The Champaign Police department said that no other injuries have been reported from this incident.

As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made in response to the incident. Officers are currently examining video footage of the surrounding area and encouraging nearby businesses and residents to come forward if they have any additional footage.
