Canada wildfire ‘smog’ reaches Midwest, contributes to poor air quality

By Lika Lezhava, Editor-In-Chief

According to IQAir, Chicago had the worst air quality in the world yesterday with an air quality index of 175. This comes about two weeks after New York and other states on the east coast experienced similarly gloomy conditions.

With over 113 active fires burning in Canada, the smoke has now migrated thousands of miles south to the Midwestern United States.

Residents of Illinois were advised to limit their outdoor activities due to the serious health risks associated with severe air impurity.

In many parts of the state, outdoor activities such as camps, events and daytime childcare had been moved inside or canceled until further notice.

The smog has been projected to last for the next few days and an Air Quality Alert has been issued until Thursday afternoon.
