Champaign man arrested after deadly traffic incident

By Maaike Niekerk, Summer Editor

A Champaign man was arrested yesterday for his role in a traffic incident near the intersection of Neil and Maple Street on June 30.

Charges against him include leaving the scene of an accident involving great bodily harm and/or death.

51-year-old Ryan Chester caused the accident by moving into the lane of 20-year-old motorcyclist Treighton Puckett. When Puckett attempted to avoid Chester’s car, he crashed into the roadway.

Chester fled the scene and officers arrived to find Puckett severely injured. Though the Champaign Police Department and Champaign Fire Department gave Puckett medical aid on the scene, he later died from his injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital.

Chester is currently in custody at the Champaign County Correctional Center.
