University Police Chief Alice Cary sent out a campus safety notice to the campus community on Wednesday afternoon regarding an aggravated assault that took place on Tuesday evening.
According to the notice, two University students were walking on a sidewalk near the intersection of Armory Avenue and Wright Street at about 7 p.m. when three people in a passing vehicle opened their doors and discharged air pellet guns.
In the notice, Cary said the students were hit several times but they were not seriously injured and did not require medical attention.
The vehicle was described by the students as a black sedan. The students also told UIPD that the assailants appeared to be wearing ski masks.
According to UIPD, the safety notice is not an indication that crime rates have risen in the area.
