The National Weather Service issued a warning of severe thunderstorms in central Illinois until 10:30 p.m.
The alert included warnings of destructive winds of up to 80 mph and flying debris which may be harmful.
Tornado sirens sounded shortly after the alert was sent out. Central Illinois has also been put on flood watch until 7 a.m. on Tuesday and tornado watch until 1 a.m.
The warning urged people to take adequate safety precautions. “Flying debris may be deadly to those without shelter,” it stated.
