A 16-year-old student at Champaign Central High School was apprehended Friday morning for bringing a firearm into school.
The student was detained, and their bag was searched after alerting the metal detectors at the school’s entrance. After a gun was found, the bag was placed in the assistant principal’s office for safekeeping, and the student was placed under arrest. The Champaign Police Department opened an investigation into the incident.
The school’s Evolv System for detecting weapons sensed the firearm before the student could pass the entryway. As a result, classes continued as scheduled with no lockdown, according to a letter sent by the school to students, staff and families regarding the incident.
“Because this is an ongoing investigation related to the arrest of a juvenile, Champaign Police are unable to provide additional details on this incident,” said an email statement by Joe Lamberson, assistant to the police chief for community services and public information officer for the CPD. “All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
